Ben & Jerry's Co-Founder States Unilever Halted Palestine-Themed Frozen Dessert Product
One of the co-founders of the well-known frozen dessert company Ben & Jerry's has claimed that parent company Unilever prevented the introduction of an innovative pro-Palestinian frozen dessert product.
The entrepreneur, who established the business alongside Jerry Greenfield, revealed that he plans to personally create this new product as part of an individual collection showcasing issues Ben & Jerry's was prevented from speaking out about.
Longstanding Dispute Between Founders and Corporate Owner
This latest announcement escalates the ongoing conflict between the internationally recognized dessert company with its corporate parent, the UK-based packaged goods corporation which acquired the ice cream brand for over two decades.
The co-founders have claimed how Unilever along with its ice cream arm Magnum unlawfully blocked Ben & Jerry's against "maintaining its activist principles".
Watermelon Flavor becoming a Symbol of Support
The entrepreneur revealed through social media that he is creating an innovative watermelon-flavored sorbet, requesting consumer ideas for naming options plus additional components.
“I'm accomplishing what they were prevented from doing,” the founder stated from a cooking set. “I'm creating a watermelon-based frozen dessert that calls for lasting ceasefire for Palestinians while demanding repairing the damage that was done there.”
This particular fruit has become an emblem for solidarity with the Palestinian people because of its colors, which mirror those of Palestine's national banner – the distinctive four-color pattern.
Previous Social Engagement and Recent Developments
In 2021, Ben & Jerry's ceased sales of their merchandise in areas under Israeli control, resulting in the parent company transferring the Israeli operation to an Israeli distributor, thereby permitting ongoing distribution in disputed territories.
The new dessert series is being created through Mr. Cohen's personal brand, the activist ice cream brand that was first established several years back for endorsing ex- political contender Senator Sanders via the product "Bernie's Back".
Leadership Changes and Upcoming Plans
Mr. Cohen revealed how he will develop other ice cream flavors that address issues that Ben & Jerry's was silenced from speaking about openly by corporate restrictions.
This development comes after co-founder Jerry Greenfield resigned his position at Ben & Jerry's in September, after decades with the organization, citing worries that its independence was compromised following Unilever's decision to curb its social activism.
At that time, Mr. Cohen stated that “My partner has a really big heart and this conflict with our parent company was deeply distressing him."
“My conscience leads me to keep working within the organization to advocate for its independence so that it can achieve the social mission, the principles that it was founded on and has maintained for over 40 years," he told media outlets.
