US air traffic controllers are increasingly seeking additional employment and reporting ill, as they continue to work unpaid during the federal closure, the transport chief has stated.

"These professionals are wearing thin," Sean Duffy told Fox News on Sunday, as some flights were halted on the California shoreline due to staffing shortages.

After the government shut down on October 1st, air traffic controllers, who are deemed essential workers, were told to keep doing their duties without pay.

But some have been missing, causing terminals to halt or reduce their plane traffic, which has exacerbated setbacks caused by climate and additional factors.

Over 3,000 American flights were postponed on Sunday, and Duffy said he anticipates the situation to deteriorate further.

"I am seeing the pressure," he remarked in an discussion on Sunday Morning Futures, noting that he had spoken to several controllers to hear their worries firsthand.

"They're taking side jobs, they're out there looking, 'Can I work for Uber, can I secure another source of earnings to make ends meet?'" he continued.

Duffy further mentioned that on the previous day twenty-two notifications at airports indicated travel would be delayed due to a lack of employees - one of the highest after the closure began.

The American federal closure reached its twenty-sixth day on Sunday, making it the second-longest halt in the past.

Duffy has repeatedly warned that aviation regulators would slow down the quantity of planes in the air if there is a shortage of security staff.

"I require my controllers focused on the airspace, not on the monetary matters at their households," Duffy said.
