Kalimuendo Fires as Nottingham Forest Secure Sentimental Victory Against Malmö
“Champions of Europe, you’ll never sing that,” rang out through the City Ground as Nottingham Forest supporters reveled in another success against Malmö. A great deal has occurred since Francis's decisive header secured the European Cup back in 1979, but the club still treasure those memories. Equally, significant shifts have occurred in the five weeks since Sean Dyche took charge, with the team appearing refreshed and earning a comfortable win courtesy of goals from Arnaud Kalimuendo, Yates, and Nikola Milenkovic, boosting their hopes of progressing in the European competition.
Building Momentum with Third Consecutive Win
For Forest, this performance – against a Malmö side that had not played for almost three weeks after finishing in sixth place in their domestic league – marked a third consecutive triumph across every tournament and added to the momentum gained from last weekend’s stunning victory at Liverpool. While this fixture was a re-run of Forest’s European Cup triumph in spirit, the encounter itself was devoid of any real tension or jitters.
This was an event dripping in sentiment, an longed-for reunion and the third meeting between the teams since the European Cup final over four decades past.
The home side leaned into the history, paying tribute to the heroes of 1979 by giving them, along with their Malmö counterparts, the VIP welcome. Thirteen members of the Swedish club’s squad from that time were also in attendance. The two clubs enjoyed a dinner together prior to the kick-off. Forest legends and company received a rousing welcome when they assembled on the field a quarter of an hour before kick-off, and a typically superb display was unveiled in the Trent End.
Remembering the Past
“May 30, 1979, Robertson crossed it in from the left flank,” displayed one part of a large tifo, in capital letters. While nobody needed reminding of what ensued, the remaining section was revealed as the squads came out from the dressing rooms. “There is Francis,” it stated. Another brilliant display showed Clough observing proceedings beside his right-hand man Peter Taylor on a bench at the Olympiastadion.
Control from the Start
So, Forest had drunk in those wonderful memories, but what about the showing on the night? It was impressive, as well. They were in complete control from the moment Kalimuendo fired an effort wide inside two minutes and established a two-goal lead by the break. Domínguez sent an early header wide and then Abbott, on his first European start, had a go.
It seemed appropriate that Yates, who joined Forest aged eight, made the initial breakthrough in the visitors' defence led by their own homegrown skipper, Pontus Jansson, previously of Leeds United and Brentford FC. The home centre-back Nikola Milenkovic saw a delivery deflect off a opponent and into the pathway of the midfielder, who swept home with his right foot from just inside the penalty area to score his maiden strike since March.
Second Goal Confirms Dominance
Yates was involved in Forest’s next goal on the verge of half-time, as well, his unmarked header saved by the goalkeeper Ellborg but Kalimuendo on hand to convert the rebound from point-blank range. James McAtee, the playmaker handed a rare start and only his second appearance since September, was the spark, lofting a perfect ball towards his teammate at the back post.
A minute earlier, Callum Hudson-Odoi low effort was turned wide off the defender Rösler, the son of ex- Manchester City striker Uwe, and an free Milenkovic also previously had a powerful header instinctively saved by Ellborg, who was back in place of the former Aston Villa goalkeeper Olsen.
Opponent's Difficulties
This was the Swedish side's first match since the Swedish Allsvenskan ended on November 9th, and they found it hard to equal the home team's energy. The Reds made it 3-0 when Milenkovic scored after his defensive colleague Murillo kept alive a set-piece. The captain had a volley blocked, but the Serbian centre-back Milenkovic feasted on the rebound.
The home side then pushed for more, with Hudson-Odoi dinking a effort on to the crossbar before Sangaré sent an ambitious effort off target from distance. It was one of those nights. The manager, aware of the upcoming league game here against Brighton, implemented seven changes from the team that stunned the Reds at Anfield last weekend, when they also netted three goals, though he called on Elliot Anderson, Dan Ndoye and Igor Jesus midway through the second half.
Hiccup-Free Night for the Team
It turned out to be a flawless evening for Nottingham Forest. Dyche could take off Murillo with the game already boxed off and subsequently introduced 19-year-old full-back Sinclair for his senior bow. He talked about the Forest old guard providing “valuable insights” at regular meetings and, almost five decades on, the current crop showed they are able of producing of excitement, as well.
