Prisons Cannot Be Resolved Overnight, Minister States, while Law Enforcement Hunt For Two Men Incorrectly Freed
Opposition justice spokesperson Robert Jenrick has labeled the circumstances as a "total mess," commenting earlier today.
Appearing on a broadcast interview, he referenced comments made by David Lammy after a recent prisoner release, saying that Lammy would establish more robust checks.
"It took six days for the prison service supposedly to even become aware this occurred" and notify the authorities, Jenrick explains, "who are now a week late in the manhunt to find him."
The opposition figure criticises the minister's handling during recent PMQs and accuses him of a "complete dereliction of duty."
Addressing incorrect inmate discharges in broader terms, Jenrick emphasizes that "every single accidental release [...] is unacceptable."
He acknowledges there were such releases under the former administration, but claims the figure "has risen significantly" under the current government.
Advocating more prisons to be built, he adds: "What the British people expect now are proper checks implemented."
"That is a specific bureaucratic error by the Ministry of Justice supervised by the minister," the opposition member concludes.
