The Fashion Icon Antony Price, Famed for Creating Looks for Iconic Acts Like Bowie and Duran Duran, Dies at 80.
The British designer Antony Price, the visionary style architect behind many legendary styles associated with musical icons like Bowie and members of Roxy Music, as well as Queen Camilla, has sadly died aged 80.
He was celebrated for his defined forms and theatrical styles, including the pastel suits that appeared in the iconic band Duran Duran's seminal music video for "their hit Rio".
"In a tribute, they called him a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' the group posted a remembrance on social media."
Price's death comes just weeks after he debuted his latest collection in London, which was his first major show in over 30 years. Singer Lily Allen walked in a dress inspired by the notorious black velvet "so-called 'revenge dress'" historically worn by Diana, Princess of Wales.
An Enduring Influence
A native of Yorkshire, born in 1945, Price relocated to London at the start of the 1960s to study at the prestigious Royal College of Art.
Upon completing his studies, he started his work in menswear at the label Stirling Copper and was behind the tight, button-detailed trousers that The Rolling Stones' frontman Mick Jagger wore during The Rolling Stones' "Gimme Shelter" tour in 1969.
He founded his own label in 1979 and staged his first fashion show a year later. The show featured as its opener creations worn by model Jerry Hall, who also wore the bridal gown Price designed for her for her marriage to Sir Mick Jagger.
Collaborations with Icons
A key creative partner of the late David Bowie, Price was the mind behind the memorable jacket the star wore for his "the song As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.
His signature ability to blend menswear and womenswear along with his expert craftsmanship in shaping body-hugging looks established him as a "one-of-a-kind talent," as stated by the British Fashion Council.
By the 1990s, he started creating ensembles for the then-Duchess of Cornwall, Camilla, including a number of outfits for her US tour after becoming Duchess.
Following a profession lasting half a century, Price held his ultimate fashion presentation in London last month in collaboration with the label 16Arlington.
