Spoiler Warning: This discussion details significant events for the concluding episodes.
Unearthing the Secrets of the Cavern
When she finds Max in the mental landscape called Camazotz, Max reveals she is sheltering in a grotto that Henry avoids at all costs. By leaving the lens cap on a viewing device taken from Henry's old home helps Holly understand that the danger lies beyond the cave. When she lines up her view through the cap, she and Max tumble into a subterranean passage.
In this place, they observe a Henry as a boy find an man who is hurt and scared. As the boy offers aid, the man panics and shoots, hitting him in the hand. In a desperate act of self-defense, Henry strikes the man down with a rock. "Is this what corrupted him?" Holly wonders aloud. The answer is affirmative, but the act went deeper than a defensive killing.
Similar to other plot points this season, the full story behind the mine shaft incident was first explored the live show The First Shadow.
A Naval Mystery and A Spy's Mission
The play reveals the 1943 event, which allegedly sent a warship into a realm known as the Abyss. The ship was attacked, and the sole survivor was the ship's commander, who returned in a catatonic condition with an different blood composition.
The captain's son, a young Martin Brenner, sought to replicate this phenomenon in the Nevada desert. However, a treacherous employee stole research materials to hand over to the Soviets, who were eager to begin their parallel research. The man in the cavern is that employee.
The Briefcase's Contents
Based on what is understood of his research, the container almost certainly contained some of Captain Brenner's infected blood. At that moment, Henry is already bleeding. It's probable he was infected upon opening the case, leading to the awakening of his powers—abilities he would inadvertently transfer to the kids Brenner would experiment on.
Alternatively, the box could have held dark matter that eventually found its way to the secret facility, where it maintains the stability of the Upside Down. The prequel shows that Henry was transported in the Abyss, coming back 12 hours later fundamentally changed. From then on, he battles the whispers of a sinister presence, similar to how Will Byers was possessed by the entity in an earlier season.
The Power of Fear
His lasting fear of that cave shows how utterly horrifying the event was for him. While he controls the army of monsters and attempts to pull the Abyss into Hawkins, a part of him remains. Vecna uses fear, and the narrative points to a climactic battle between Vecna and Will, who has confronted his personal demons to become stronger.
Will's growth has neutralized a key tactic of Vecna. More importantly, Will now knows what the monster's own weakness, potentially giving him a key upper hand in the ultimate battle ahead.
