The network's Leading New Show of This Year Earns a Substantial Renewal for an Additional Two Seasons.

In October of last year, the late-night programming block saw the return of its unconventional hit, Smiling Friends. Yet, shortly thereafter, the network introduced a fresh animated series with a strikingly different vibe. Haha, You Clowns was heartwarming and calm, reminiscent of a animated take of a contemplative talk show. During a period often characterized by cynicism, this show's sincerity found an audience and turned it into a surprise hit.

A Significant Investment

On December 18th, the network made a major announcement: Haha, You Clowns has been picked up for two additional seasons. This provides showrunner Joe Cappa ample opportunity to further explore the story of the Campbell family. The series follows three well-mannered teenage brothers whose defining trait is their deep love for their widowed father, with Cappa providing the voices for all four key characters.

"My deepest thanks go to the fans of the show who took a chance on the show and helped it grow," stated Cappa. "I’m incredibly thrilled that I get to hang out at the Campbell household for seasons to come."

Network Praise

In the same announcement praise from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who described the series as "radically heartfelt and oddly captivating." He specifically highlighted the fans who embraced the show and advocated for its uniquely offbeat style.

"All of you showed up for this new show, praised it on social media, and helped it grow week over week so we could greenlight not one, but two more seasons," noted Ouweleen. "As the show says: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"

A Wholesome Alternative

When it first aired, Haha, You Clowns was praised as "a comforting antidote" to more cynical adult animated fare. Viewers found something deeply soothing about following this charming family go about their everyday routines.

Previously, creator Joe Cappa shared his goal to help comedy break out of its long-running layer of irony. He linked this trend to a broader media landscape.

“It feels like there's a default mode of irony that we can't get ourselves out of,” explained Cappa. “The attitude is that we have to know we’re the cleverest viewer in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for too long, and we just have to laugh at something different now. Comedy has to evolve.”

The Path Forward

Now, with Haha, You Clowns set to continue, Cappa could potentially be part of that very evolution. Or at the very least, the renewal promises audiences additional episodes to enjoy the heartfelt moments of the endearing Campbell clan.

The final episode of Season 1 of Haha, You Clowns will premiere on December 21st. The complete first season is available for streaming on HBO Max.
