The distinctive yellow-fronted apartment block in the background helped us verify the footage.

We are analyzing video footage and photographs circulated this morning that depict the aftermath of a alleged car bomb blast that authorities in Russia state killed a senior soldier in Moscow.

Officials in Russia stated that Lt Gen Fanil Sarvarov was inside the car that detonated and that he succumbed of his injuries. An investigation is under way.

Our starting point to check the location from which the pictures originated was based on posts saying the explosion occurred on Yasenevaya Ulitsa in the southern part of the Russian capital.

Our analysis employed panoramic mapping services on Google Maps and the Russian search engine Yandex to match the unique yellow hue of a adjacent apartment building seen in the footage.

Identifying other buildings, streetlights and the street layout confirmed the exact location the footage were captured.

We also checked that the video clips were recent and that the visuals had not been manipulated.
